NEW DELHI: Indian Railways has decided to grant 40% concession in passenger fare to transgender and senior citizens aged 60 or above. It also increased the combined reservation quota of lower berths for senior citizens, female passengers and pregnant women in mail, express trains, Rajdhani and Duronto trains.

“Ministry of Railways has decided to grant 40% concession in railway passenger fare to transgender (T) senior citizen of age 60 years & above, with effect from 1 January 2019,” news agency ANI quoted Sunil Udasi, chief public relations officer of Central Railways.

Sources said the new policy recognises the third gender and a column will be added beside male and female in the reservation/ cancellation form and website.

As of now, men aged 60 years or above and women aged 58 or above can avail concession in all the classes of trains. While women are entitled for 50% discount, men get 40% discount. From January, the third category will also be added and they will be also eligible for concession.
