Smoking on Rise among young Working Women in India: Survey

As we all know that smoking is very hazardous for health because nicotine content is present in it. It can easily let free radicals enter the body which contains unpaired electrons and acts with various substances in the body to form new cells. This new cell formation can lead to bad health or become a cause of cancer. It is highly addictive. Still, many of us continue to consume it. A new study noted that around 19% of women and 23% of men in the United States are current smokers. Each year cigarette smoking causes more than 400,000 impulsive deaths in the United States. The most astonishing thing is people consider “cigarette” as a stress buster. Recently an official survey was conducted to ascertain the smoking trend in young working women in India. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) said in a statement that in the “disturbing tendency”, women must appreciate that by smoking cigarettes they are affecting a threat to their heart’s health. Casual and social smoking has roused day by day by increasing rate among young and working women across the metros in India.

The survey body (ASSOCHAM) secretary general D S Rawat said in a statement that “More and more number of young women can be seen all around commercial hubs in metros enjoying a smoke comfortably with their colleagues, this is certainly a disturbing trend.” But young women must realize it is “uncool” that they are placing their heart at the risk of cigarette smoking. Survey bodies also revealed that approximately, 2,000 women in the age group of 22 to 30 in 10 urban cities – Ahmadabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune these big metro city’s young working women are indulging herself in smoking habit. Only two percent of the total women surveyed said they were ‘heavy smokers’ and a majority of them are responsible for gazing stress and work-related stress for an increase in the number of cigarettes they smoked. While 40 % women consider themselves as “very light smoker” with smoking just two are three cigarettes either daily or occasionally. And remaining 46 percent said they had quit smoking. The survey also noted that many women are indulged in smoking for the reason of weight loss.

Most of the women who were a part of the survey said they mostly smoked when they took alcoholic drinks and that too publicly. Some of them women exposed that they smoke offhandedly, perceiving it to be “cool” aspect, and said it gave them a feeling of prettiness, autonomy, and complexity.
