If you are looking for any healthy eating advice, then this is very common and you can find it anywhere, on every corner of the internet, magazines etc. But this is not a fact that every advice is a good advice. Research on nutrition is very confusing as it is changing always. If we follow a bad advice on foods and nutrition, we opt to quit our favorite food sometimes. The case becomes worst when we choose an unhealthier option and we think that we have made a better choice. Let’s look at the 8 food myths, which are very famous among us but they don’t really need to exist.
Myth #1- Egg Yolks Are Bad For You
99% of the time, you might have heard this. But let’s look at the real fact and we need not run behind this famous myth. Dietary cholesterol has been wrongly blamed for raising our blood cholesterol levels for a considerable length of time. It’s moved toward becoming clearer that saturated fats and trans fats are more persuasive in raising blood cholesterol levels. And keeping in mind that eggs—the yolks included—are high in cholesterol, they are moderately low in saturated fats. Lots of research, which have been conducted in the recent years, has revealed that the whole egg is healthy for our diet. It does not have any impact on cholesterol levels or heart disease risk.
Myth #2 – Coffee is Dehydrating
Many of us know that coffee is dehydrating product because it is a diuretic. But it is extremely mild one. Let us tell you that coffee has a lot of water in it and therefore apart from being diuretic, it also counts towards fulfilling your daily fluid intake. If you take 2 or 3 cups of coffee in a day, that is completely fine for you.
Myth #3 – Organic Food is Automatically Healthy
Whenever we hear the word ‘organic’, we think that it is healthy. But is it? The real truth is organic snacks are after all snacks only. Excess eating of organic snacks is not OK as well. A recent research revealed that organic foods or snacks such as cookies, chips, crackers, and candies also have the same amount of fat, sugar and empty calories as the non-organic snacks have. The minimum difference is just the pesticide residue in these foods because nonorganic foods have the highest amount of pesticides on them but the organic foods are monitored at a level so that the pesticide residue on these foods stays below a certain limit. But still ‘organic’ does not mean it is healthy.
Myth #4 – Eating after 6 PM makes you Gain Weight
The most common weight loss tactics we have heard is that we should eat until 6 PM and then avoid consuming food till next day breakfast. But in reality, most of the people find it unsuccessful. But the fact behind weight loss is not when you eat, it’s what you eat. Losing weight successfully means burning more calories than you consume. If your calorie intake is more than your body needs, then it is sure that you will gain weight. Let’s see a small difference – A person who is eating more calories until 6 PM will gain more weight than the person who is eating a lower amount of calories until 8 PM. Therefore, losing weight is all about your diet but not the time of diet.
Myth #5 – Dark bread is Healthier than White
Whenever we got to buy bread, we assume that the dark bread is healthier than the white, just because it is supposed to have greater whole grains content in it. But that is not true always. Sometimes, its truly is that the nutritional value of the dark bread is same as of the white bread, and the dark color just comes due to the caramel color content in it. Therefore, whenever you are going to buy bread in the stores, make sure you don’t go for the color, look for the true contents of whole grains in it. Just because bread is dark, doesn’t mean that the bread is healthy for you.
Myth #6 – Fasting Periodically Helps Detox
We always think that if we fast periodically, we can remove toxins from our body. Do you know that our body has its own system which has been designed for the removal of toxins? Then why should we fast? The natural toxin removal system in our body includes organs such as spleen, liver, kidney and the whole digestive system. Although there is not enough evidence that fasting helps us detoxing, but this procedure is incredibly popular nowadays. Leaving food for the duration of time and consuming just juices is not supported by science for detoxification of our body, even doctors don’t prefer it. To get rid of toxins, we should take well balances fiber-rich diet and drink enough water every day.
Myth #7 – Fresh is always better than Frozen
This is a very popular myth that fresh fruits and vegetables are always better than the frozen ones. But eating fresh foods all time is not always possible. Few fruits and vegetables aren’t generally accessible, particularly when it’s not their season. We are persuaded that fresh produce is better to anything frozen or the frozen items are unhealthy for us.
The reason behind this is that we assume that freezing food items decreases the nutritional value of the product. But do you the truth? Scientists have explained in recent researches that freezing food items not actually decrease the nutritional value but it actually preserves the nutrients. Many evidence from the researchers shows that the nutritional content of fresh foods and frozen foods are same. Therefore, if fresh foods are not available to you, frozen foods are also a healthy option.
