Yes, you heard it right! A latest survey revealed that approx. 22% of the total population in India is suffering from the problem of constipation. Out of this figure of 22%, Kolkata has topped the chart with 28 percent of the survey respondents suffering from the problem. The survey report claims that out of 22 percent of adult population suffering from constipation in India, 13 percent of them are suffering from severe constipation and 13 percent are suffering from the problem combined with little comorbidity such as anxiety or depression.

According to the survey report, Kolkata is top in the chart with 28 percent of respondents who are suffering from constipation. It is also reported that maximum numbers of people in Kolkata who are suffering from constipation never consult any do and prefer on self-medication.
After Kolkata in the top position, Chennai has a whopping 24 percent of population who have the problem of constipation and severe stomach pain while passing the stools. Delhi follows Chennai, with 23 percent of people having the problem of constipation. It is also that Delhi has the highest number of people who have a high intake of outside or junk foods.
Apart from these top three cities with top positions in the chart, other cities which have lower rate of constipation problems are Patna, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Lucknow. The survey report also claims that cough and cold is the most common problem faced by the people in India, and other than cough and cold, it is the constipation which is most common in Indians.
Reasons for Constipation
Survey also claimed that reason which are associated with the problem of constipation in Indians are lifestyle disorders in them such as hypertension, diabetes or other similar type of disorders. Indians make a delay in seeking medical help for the treatment of constipation, making it worse. Unhealthy eating or consumption of junk food, no exercise, having fewer amounts of water intake and unhealthy lifestyle are some of the most common reasons which can lead to constipation.
