Even as Congress sharpened its attack on the Modi government over the Rafale deal, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari sought to corner the government over its promise to generate two crore jobs every year, alleging that one crore jobs had instead reduced under Modi government’s watch. “In December 2017, 40.79 crore people in India were employed. In 2018, this number reduced to 39.07 crore, indicating a loss of over one crore jobs,” Tewari said. Congress also claimed India’s unemployment levels rose to 7.4% in December 2018.
Government, however, has maintained that there is no authentic data on employment. Government functionaries have cited EPF, ESIC and NPS data to argue that jobs are being created in the formal sector.
