NEW DELHI: A memorial to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was dedicated to the nation on his 94th birth anniversary on Tuesday. Called ‘Sadaiv Atal’, the memorial built near Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, where Vajpayee was cremated on August 17, saw President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi pay tribute to the leader.

“Tributes to Atalji on his jayanti. We reiterate our commitment towards creating the India he dreamt of,” the PM tweeted. Vajpayee’s birthday is observed as Good Governance Day.

BJP chief Amit Shah offered flowers at the lotus-shaped memorial. He took to twitter to say, “Sadaiv Atal memorial is an inspiration for crores of countrymen.”

Vajpayee’s long-time colleague L K Advani offered tributes with his family. BJP said in a tweet the Bogibeel bridge in Assam, which was inaugurated on Tuesday, was a gift from a student (Modi) to his teacher (Vajpayee).

Vajpayee passed away in Delhi on August 16 after a prolonged illness. He was cremated with full state honours.

The memorial will be managed by a trust headed by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

A vacant piece of land was made available for the memorial over 1.5 acres, the memorial was built at a cost of Rs 10.5 crore. The memorial is enclosed by nine bas-relief walls with inscriptions of Vajpayee’s poetry.
